In summer 2016, the American Library Association (ALA) Task Force on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) released its 58 recommendations to build more equity, diversity, and inclusion among ALA members, the field of librarianship, and communities. The Public Library Association (PLA) Board agreed PLA should examine the needs of PLA members and public libraries about these issues and consider actions and new programs.
PLA charged the Emerging Leaders (EL) Team A with identifying public libraries with unique and forward thinking diversity initiatives related to recruitment, hiring, promotion, professional development, and other areas. Essentially, Team A has helped identify and share public library “best practices” about staff diversity. EL Team A contacted library staff to collect information and learn from those libraries’ successes and challenges. Data collected will be used in PLA publications and continuing education.
